Name: House Greythorne
Leadership: Mallory Greythorne
Area: Port-Au-Feu
World: Sangria

The Greythornes are an ancient magical family, well known in mystic circles for their powerful arcane heritage, wealth, political influence, and charitable support of social institutions such as the Queensmouth Academy. They are, as many wealthy and powerful families tend to be, seen as rather eccentric; however, they are also known for giving back to the community, helping those in need, and never letting any member of the community go without having their needs met, as best they're able. Given their generally benevolent reputation, to say nothing of their financial generosity, the family's other oddities tend to be forgiven by the wider magical community. Mundane folk generally know little about them.

Holdings

  • The family's home and seat of power, Greythorne Manor, is located in the neighborhood of Le Jardin.
  • The Greythorne family owns and operates Greythorne's Mystic Emporium, a highly successful magic shop in Port-Au-Feu that often mysteriously appears elsewhere as well.
  • The family also has holdings in Arcadia, though as this exists beyond what is known reality for most Sangrians, it is not widely known outside the family.

History

The Greythorne family can trace its roots back for centuries, to the dark ages of Britain's past and beyond. The sire of their line was Draconar Greythorne, a sorcerer who was famed for being able to change into a dragon—though, in reality, it was the other way around. Draconar was a warlord, controlling a large span of lands in Brittany before it became a province of France. He vanished from the world, never to be seen again, when he became enamored of a lady known among mortals as Ceinwen, though she was in reality a daughter of a fairy king. Over many generations, the Greythorne line often interbred with the Fae, keeping close family ties, and so the family line continued. Many of them never died, simply crossing over into the fairy realm of and vanishing amongst their immortal relatives when they grew weary of the human world.

The eldest son of Dragonar and Ceinwen was named Mallory, born during the late middle ages, around 1200 AD. He grew up traveling with his parents, sometimes in his father's various dens and sometimes at the court of his mother's father, a fairy king. In due course, Mallory came of age and into his own power and, after many years of arcane study and world-spanning adventure, when his parents vanished away into the Spirit World to seek their own new adventures, Mallory found himself guardian of the family line. He settled down, becoming a more-or-less respectable member of magical society, and properly established what would become known as House Greythorne, establishing what would become their reputation as powerful enchanters and purveyors of precious artifacts.

When, in the modern era, two of of the house's younger, more public members, Adalric and Raquel Greythorne, were apparently killed in a magical accident, Mallory took it upon himself—presenting himself as an "uncle"—to looking after their children. While Mal may not always be the most capable parent, he was at least a stalwart protector and has ensured the safety of the family's interests and legacy until the boys came of age. Then, the younger sons were enrolled at Queensmouth Academy, while those old enough were given support to venture out into the world to find such fortunes as might delight them as they wished. Mallory himself has since returned to his roaming life of adventure, often between and beyond the known worlds.
