|bg=River and his identical twin brother Dakota were born minutes apart on October 1, 1995. Their parents, two rather eccentric out of time hippies, were thrilled to have two vibrant, identical young boys. The Chance family was a trust-fund family, but they chose to live like vagabonds out of a rather simple Winnebago. Since they didn't have to work, Samuel and Rebecca spent most of their time teaching their two children to play, surf and enjoy the simple pleasures of life, traveling up and down the eastern coast.

The twins were homeschooled, not surprisingly, and the Chances were an unusual but well-liked staple of the beaches. It was a dream life, though it left the boys a bit socially awkward and with an unhealthy sense of entitlement. It was all shattered just a few years ago, when the real estate market collapsed. All of the Chance's trust fund investments were lost, and they suddenly faced being homeless and penniless.

Unable to deal with the loss, Samuel did the horribly unthinkable, and took his own life. As his mother shared the news with the boys, the X-gene exploded within River, and he tore from his clothing in a burst of fur, his human appearance vanishing in a blur of white and black. Dakota was frightened of his brother the mutant, as was their mother, so River fled. He has since fallen into a life of burglary, remaining the vagabond he was raised as.
