|bg=Alexei Karl Pedersen, despite a rather exotic name, was born in a very non-exotic urban industrial center of the Midwest. His father was Danish and disappeared when he was a toddler; his mother followed not long after. He lived with her sister, too many kids, and not a lot of attention long enough to get through 10th grade, then dropped out. One thing led to another led to his finishing high school in juvie, where he was incarcerated for theft until age 19. He headed for Gotham City when he got out.

Alexei began working on construction sites as a day laborer, and he has done that kind of work for the past decade and a half. It's a kind of work that fits his personality: temporary, generally paid in cash, no need to pretend to be interested in playing some kiss-ass game, and not always technically legal. He's smart and reads voraciously, but he's got no patience for the structure of schooling.|Alexei did start an apprenticeship program as an electrician not too long after he got to the city, but he dropped that. He said it was because the master electrician was a dick. That was true (at least *he* thought the guy was a dick), but that wasn't the real reason. Not long after he started it, he was fooling around on his own and got shocked by an ungrounded main on an industrial site--and wasn't even knocked back by it even though it brought power down for about four blocks around.

Things got weird for a while after that. Alexei holed up in his apartment for the next month, then, when the landlord started eviction, left and squatted in a mechanics shack for another two. Gingerly, by experiments late at night in deserted places (or ones with bad security), he managed to feel out his powers and enhanced abilities. He didn't seek out any help with this--why would he? Training was for bourgie jerks with money and connections, or those willing to sell themselves to those jerks. That wasn't him. Wage labor is exploitation enough; his power, at least, is his alone to direct.
